Green Mist

 Origin: Coonoor, India

Garden: Tea Studio

Infusion Suggestion: 190°F, 4 min

Certifications: None

Caffeine: Low

Tasting Notes: Toasted Grains and Sweet Herbs

Green Mist: A soft and woody green tea with naturally sweet undertones made using only the stems of the plant.

This unusual Indian green tea, low in caffeine, is made by one of India's first female tea producers -- Muskan Khanna. She draws subtle, woody flavors from the pressed stems of the tea plant. This tea is part of a collection of teas Khanna is making by adapting Chinese production styles to Indian plants and methods.

Taste:  While sipping Green Mist, you will find two unique sensory experiences.  Raising the cup to your lips you will taste the fresh notes of a dew filled forest. Each sip concludes with slightly sweet and modest expressions of mint and anise.  This cleansing cup of tea leaves the tea drinker's palate revitalized and refreshed.

Production:  Green Mist is one of the only kukicha-style teas being produced in India.  This labor-intensive tea is created by first separating the stalks and leaves.  Using only the stems, branches and twig materials from the plant, the material is panned and flattened using specialized machines. It is no surprise that Green Mist tastes more woody than typical teas which contain the bud and first two leaves. Because caffeine is concentrated in the leaf of the plant, Green Mist’s caffeine boost is minimal in comparison. Tea Studio is excited to be bringing Chinese and Japanese processing techniques to Indian gardens.

Region:  The Nilgiris contain India’s southern-most mountains.  While the district is only slightly larger than Darjeeling, it produces nearly four times as much tea – attributed to the year-round growth in this tropical climate.  Unlike other regions, most of the land is owned by small growers who sell their green leaf to “bought leaf” factories. Nigiri teas are generally known to be less bitter and therefore make fantastic ice teas.

Growers: Tea Studio is a state of the art processing facility in the Nilgiris run by father-daughter team Indi and Muskan Khanna.  While Indi has been producing fine Indian teas for decades, Muskan was interested in incorporating traditional Chinese methods enabling her create one-of-a-kind teas for the area.  In addition, Tea Studio is an educational space designed to host groups and teach professionals how to make fine whole leaf teas.

Impact:  With the creativity and expertise employed at Tea Studio – the breadth and interest of Indian teas will continue to expand.  Though education and professional development, more small growers will have access to the resources they need to process high quality teas allowing them access to the specialty tea world.  In an industry dominated by middle aged men, Muskan represents a youthful energy and face that will be essential if tea will continue to survive in rural India.

The right one

Like everyone else I have read about the benefits of green teas and so I have been on a constant search to find one that was not just beneficial but tasted good too. Always disappointed. Drinking green tea has always been more medicinal than pleasurable. The right thing to do. Along comes Green Mist! A truly great tasting green tea. The combination of taste and smell begs for a time of reflective relaxation.
