Darjeeling Green: An unusually soft and elegant green tea created at one of Darjeeling's most enchanting tea gardens.

Produced in an ecologically diverse forest on Darjeeling’s sloping hillsides, Darjeeling Green is a smooth and mellow green tea.  It is plucked at the onset of the monsoons and quickly moved from rolling to drying to preserve its fresh taste and reduce bitterness.

Taste:  Unlike many green teas, Darjeeling Green does not have the astringency typical of green teas and can be enjoyed without jarring the taste buds. The softness comes in part from the long leaves which release their tasting notes slowly over time.

Production: Darjeeling Green is harvested just prior to and during the summer monsoons.  The leaf is plucked, left to wither (to reduce the water content), rolled (to break the cell walls and begin oxidation) and then dried.  The teas are processed by the same machines that processed Makaibari teas for 150 years.  Once dried, the teas are hand sorted to eliminate any debris before making their way to market.

Region: Running along Nepal’s Eastern Border, the mountainous area of Darjeeling is a confluence of cultures - home to Tibetans, Nepalese and Indians alike. “Darjeeling” actually means “Land of the Rolling Thunder” in Tibetan.  Under colonialism, the mild mountain temperatures made Darjeeling a perfect retreat for British soldiers.

Darjeeling’s high elevation means the tea leaves are smaller and slower to grow.  Therefore, producers in the area focused on defining the region by quality, and have built a tea tradition that fetch some of the highest prices in the world.

Growers:  Makaibari has led the way in progressive socially minded plantation practices.  Through developing a homestay program and additional eco-tourism activities, workers add diversified income streams to their tea related work.

Impact:  Through biodynamic and permaculture farming practices, the ecological diversity of Makaibari makes it one of the healthiest and most resilient tea gardens in Darjeeling.  The abundance of plant and animal species create healthy soils, disease resistance in the plants, and a stratified root structure that retains water and minimizes landslides.

The BEST!

I am a green tea lover and I've tried many. This is is simply THE BEST of them all! I always come back to it after trying other options when I've run out of my YMT stash. When I get my order and steep my first cup, it's like settling in with a comforting old friend.....all is well in the world again.
