This masala chai loose-leaf blend is inspired by road trips across the Himalayas, combining strong black tea with dried ginger, fresh black pepper, and aromatic cardamom for a vibrant and spicy cup.
Tasting Notes: Our debut chai blend doubles down on the strength of Organic Assam Black by adding a fiery punch of ginger and a burst of spicy black pepper. Deliciously fragrant cardamom softens and sweetens the cup, yielding a satisfying blend with an aroma, color, and mouthfeel that’s as rich as its flavor. This masala chai was designed to be enjoyed by itself or with a splash of milk. True to the Himalayan tradition, it can also be made more decadent with a liberal spoonful (or three) of sweetener. Recipe Formulation: This chai blend is inspired by Himalayan road trips. Driving throughout the mountains of India and Nepal, one is likely to find as many chai recipes as turns in the road. However, our favorite recipe comes from Kumaon, where chai serves as a vessel for ginger, perfect for warding off the cold of a crisp, clear morning in the mountains. Our friends at the Jasmine Pearl Tea Company took our tales of our favorite cups of chai and ran with it, experimenting with black pepper and cardamom to deliver a multidimensional masala chai loose-leaf with punch and pizazz.
Impact: The goal for our line of blends is to find new ways to showcase the teas made by our Indian and Nepali partners. The base for this blend, Organic Assam Black, comes from the Chardwar Estate, a leader of social and environmental practices in India tea. We know our customers have discerning palates, which is why we chose to partner with our good friends and master blenders at the Jasmine Pearl Tea Company in Portland, Oregon. They are incredibly skilled at selecting herbs and spices to complement and enhance—rather than mask—the base tea’s inherent character and qualities.
