Chirrapani Tea Garden
Please note that while traveling in India, we're almost guaranteed to experience unforeseen events that will change our itinerary. Flexibility and patience are your best friends!
Day 16: Travel to Delhi – India’s capitol is an energizing city with tuk-tuks, rickshaws, cows, porters and the occasional elephant. Although you might be star-struck at first - join into the flow!
Day 17: Agra/Taj Mahal – Day Trip. Travel to one of the world’s most acclaimed architectural accomplishments. Get a personal tour of the Taj with our friend and guide. Trip also includes some of our favorite roadside chai and restaurant biriyani – a spiced Indian rice dish.
Day 18: Travel to Kumaon – Explore one of India’s first tea growing regions in the foothills of the western Himalayas. We will be greeted by Desmond – the grower and producer responsible for creating our first tea: Kumaon White.
Day 19: Tour Tea Garden and Factory – Walk through the jungle and rhododendron forest teeming with howler monkeys, and see the tea plants nestled throughout the terraced forest. Some of these gardens were originally planted by the British in the mid 1800’s. Finish with a factory tour and meet those who make all our Kumaon teas.
Day 20: Tour of Nursery and Office Visit – Visit a thriving tea nursery where plants are propagated and distributed to farmers throughout the region as part of a government initiative to encourage tea farming. End with an office visit and opportunity to drink more tea.
Day 21: Travel to Delhi – last chance to find spices, souvenirs and treats.
Day 22: Depart for HOME!
"This trip allowed me to get to know India on a different level. We became intimately connected with the local people by staying with families in their homes, dancing to traditional music, and by putting our hands together again and again saying 'Namaste.' It was an amazing trip."
"I originally planned to take a trip with Young Mountain to see where our tea was coming from. I own a local day spa in Eugene, and we try to ensure we are partnering with ethical companies that match up with our own values as much as possible. Little did I know, I would end up getting so much more from my trip. I feel like I have opened a door to experiences and relationships that will affect me for the rest of my life. India has her hook in my heart, and I absolutely can't wait to go back."
Raj has been traveling throughout rural India for the last decade and organizing trips for the last three years. He's thrilled to offer others the chance to experience rural Indian life. In particular, road-side samosas with scorching hot, sickly sweet, deliciously gingery chai.
