Ahhh the fire and strength of a good cuppa’ black! It’s the world’s most popular style of tea, and the secrets behind making black tea revolve around how the tea maker chooses to oxidize the freshly harvested tea leaf.
In this bundle of five loose leaf black teas, our goal was to demonstrate just how diverse this popular style of tea can be. We started with the trusted classics: a malty, full-bodied Assam from the Chardwar Estate on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, and a layered, fruity Darjeeling 2nd Flush from the Makaibari Estate perched up in the towering Himalayas. Then, to highlight how an established tea region is reinventing itself, we included the expertly-shaped Nilgiri Black Pearl. This wonderfully rich and aromatic black is made by the all-women team at the Tea Studio, who flip the leaf in the air for hours to unlock tangy notes of fresh cranberries.
Finally, to highlight how small farmers from new origins are experimenting with novel techniques, we concluded with two exceptional teas from Kumaon and Nepal. The Kumaon Black comes from our close partners in the Champawat Village, who harvest top-quality clonal bushes in the early summer to make this light, aromatic black. The Nepali Golden Black is made by the Tinjure Cooperative in eastern Nepal, who are meticulous in harvesting the prized bud of the tea leaf to make this gem. The high bud count in the finished tea contributes sweetness and mouthfeel that make it our most popular black tea.
