Darjeeling Copper Black | Loose-Leaf Black Tea

Origin: Darjeeling, North Eastern India

Tea Maker: Victoria’s Peak

Contains Caffeine

A tart black tea with aromas of tamarind and orange blossom that dissolve into a body of hot cocoa and fruit leather.

Taste: This tea is comfort in a cup, and the experience begins with the visual - the dry leaf is neat, clean, and marked by a high number of buds that give its copper color. Upon brewing, bright aromas twist upwards, carrying layers of tart tamarind and sweet orange blossom as they rise. Upon drinking, the fruitiness moves down into a deep, comforting body marked by notes of hot cocoa and fruit leather.

Production: A super fine pluck of only the bud and first leaf gives this tea the necessary starting point for making a quality tea. Made In early summer, just before the monsoons hit, the harvest is given a hard roll to fully break open the leaf and release the juices that give this tea both strong flavor and balanced, delicate layers.

Region: Running along Nepal’s Eastern Border, the mountainous area of Darjeeling is a confluence of cultures - home to Tibetans, Nepalese and Indians alike. The name “Darjeeling” translates into “Land of the Rolling Thunder” in Tibetan.  Under colonialism, the mild mountain temperatures made Darjeeling a perfect retreat for British soldiers, with stunning views of Kangchenjunga from the hillsides, the world’s third highest peak.

Darjeeling’s high elevation means the tea leaves are smaller and slower to grow.  Therefore, producers in the area focused on defining the region by quality, and have built a tea tradition that fetches some of the highest prices in the world.

Tea Makers: The Chirimar family that owns Victoria’s Peak has worked in tea over the years – as tea tasters, brokers and garden owners. They have dedicated themselves to bringing the quality and craftsmanship of Darjeeling teas to the highest level. Their head tea maker is also the person behind our Darjeeling Ruby Oolong, and the parallels between the two teas are striking.

Impact: Through expanding the taste and quality of Indian teas, new teas like Copper Black set the stage for more experimentation among growers and challenge the uniform tastes that have dominated Darjeeling production since its inception.
