The tea plant is indigenous to the Himalayan foothills. We named our company after this “roof of the world”--a young mountain range that’s still rising. And this gift set is our tribute to the ways local communities are driving change through agriculture, including tea and plant-based handicrafts.
We’ve included organic tea sourced from three different Himalayan tea pioneers. The tea makers at the legendary Makaibari Estate in Darjeeling have been leaders in the organic and biodynamic movements in Indian tea for decades, and their green tea is an instant everyday drinker. Just across the border from Darjeeling, the Tinjure Co-op is Nepal’s first community-owned tea factory, where the rich black tea in this gift set is created. Finally, our partners in Kumaon, the once-lost tea region that sits at the heart of our mission-driven work, made this delightful organic spring white tea. Its inception was a true collaboration--we brought them samples of Chinese white tea, and they ran with the inspiration to make the first white tea ever produced in this remote part of India.
This is our most luxurious gift set thanks to the gorgeous-yet-cozy blue linen scarf, handmade by women in Kumaon. The scarf is one project produced by Avani, a Kumaon-based non-profit that focuses on empowering local women through plant-based product creation. The founders of Avani have been our mentors since our founder Raj’s college days, and it was on their campus that the idea to start Young Mountain Tea was born. This organic, handmade indigo scarf is hand-crafted by local women who use local plants to create this vibrant, natural dye. In the process, they regenerate local soils and create sustainable livelihoods.
