Oolong tea is one of the most tricky types of tea to make. The tea maker has to start with specific leaf quality, steel their own endurance for a long day (and often night) of processing, then adapt to changing ambient conditions as they go. By cycling between rolling and oxidizing the leaf over hours, the tea makers build layers of aromas and flavors into each pearled leaf.

In this bundle of three loose leaf oolong teas from India and Nepal, we have a trio of unique gems. First up, our wildly popular Darjeeling Ruby Oolong, a shaped pearl tea with decadent notes of fig and black berries from Victoria’s Peak. The Shangri-La Oolong from Nepal’s Kanchanjangha Tea Estate represents innovation in action, with pleasantly surprising flavors of tart raspberry. Finally, the Nilgiri Black Beauty made by the all-women team at the Tea Studio in the Nilgiris of South India boasts a mind-melding medley of fresh apricot, crushed star anise, and toasted pine nuts.

After trying some of Young Mountain’s teas about a year ago in an office environment, I recently ordered two bundles (Oolong + a mix) to try here at home, with the goal of adding something special to my “usual” mix of teas (nothing fancy). From the first pour, I was reminded of how much I enjoyed Young Mountain’s teas the first time I tried them, and now that I’ve tried every tea on my recent order, I can honestly say that these are the best teas I’ve had (and I’ve had some amazing teas in Asia). I’m excited to order more, and happy that I can enjoy top-shelf teas from a small, local business. Triple win!
