Tasting Notes: This classic black tea blend starts with our single-origin Organic Kumaon Black, a lovely black with natural notes of rich caramel and bittersweet cocoa. The bergamot oil, which is made from the rinds of a small citrus fruit, adds a clean and slightly sour twist that builds on the black tea’s foundation. The result is a fresh, uplifting cup that’s great hot or cold.
Recipe Formulation: The key to a quality Earl Grey is a robust black tea. We experimented with a variety of the blacks in our collection before we settled on Organic Kumaon Black as the base because of its ability to offer strength and nuance at the same time. Paired with a solid black tea, the defining flavor of Earl Grey is bergamot oil. Pure bergamot oil is incredibly aromatic, so it took several trials to fine tune the amount of essential oil that would lift the black tea’s rich notes without dominating the cup. After multiple attempts, we landed on a satisfying, well-balanced ratio that we hope you enjoy.
Impact: This blend uses our signature black tea from Kumaon, an emerging Himalayan tea region where we started our company. We are proud to be Kumaon’s first international importer, and now we’re taking next steps to support local communities by launching the region’s first farmer-owned processing facility.
