What Our Tea Bags Are Made Of

As a company working to leave the earth a little more beautiful than we found it, low impact tea bags was a no-brainer. As we researched the packaging world,  we've learned that the issue of sustainable waste management is a vast one, rife with grey areas, green washing, and white lies. So on this page, we wanted to share with you what our packaging is made of today, with a commitment to improving what they're made of tomorrow.

And the journey towards zero-waste is a collective effort between companies like ours, tea drinkers like you, packaging manufacturers, municipal waste services, and more. So if this issue galvanizes you, we hope you'll write to our local leaders to have them support stronger waste programs for us all!

TIN
Durable and reusable, made from 100% recyclable steel. Labels are not recyclable but made from 50% hemp and 50% post-consumer waste. Note that most cities will accept metal tins/cans (aluminum and steel) in the curbside recycling program, but you’ll want to verify acceptance through your program.

POUCH
Our stand-up pouches (containing 100 unwrapped tea bags) are #2 curbside recyclable. Please verify acceptance through your city's recycling program.

TEA BAG, STRING & TAG
Made from 100% sugarcane PLA, a commercially compostable material that degrades into only organic matter (no microplastics!). The tea bag, string, and tag are currently commercial compostable due to the higher temperatures needed to break the PLA down.

TEA
Made from nothing but the good ol’ leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant! Besides being eco-friendly, the tea bags are breathable enough to steep the tea evenly and strong enough to endure multiple infusions.
