February 2018 Newsletter - The Secret Life of Kumaon Black
The Secret Life of Kumaon Black...
Kumaon, the region alongside Nepal's western border was first planted with tea in the 1850s. The tea plants thrived, but were too far from the ports to make plantation development feasible. The experimental plots were abandoned, leaving the young cuttings to grow wild. However, beginning in the 1990s, the government took up a program to revive tea growth as a way to create rural livelihood opportunities.
Desmond Birkbeck oversees the government’s efforts in his hometown of Champawat. He also runs his family's own tea garden that contains some of the oldest tea trees in the region. We've partnered with him to bring these unique Kumaon teas outside of India for the first time.
Kumaon Black is a fine and even sorted black tea with abundant golden tips woven throughout. It brews a deep amber color with aromatic flavor notes of caramel and chocolate. Treat yourself to this unique taste - for the month of February, get 25% off any amount of Kumaon Black.
