April 2018 Newsletter - Greetings From India

April 2018 Newsletter - Greetings From India
Through government sponsored initiative, local farmers attend a workshop with Desmond Birkbeck to learn about tea cultivation.

Greetings from India!  We are back in Kumaon working with our friends as they bring one of India's oldest tea growing regions back to life.  Follow us @youngmtntea to see the adventure unfold.

While this area was one of the first places the British cultivated tea, Kumaon (bordering Nepal's western border) never boomed like Darjeeling and Assam. Today, vacant terraces mean that there are opportunities for young Kumaon farmers to enter the tea business and create their own reputation for the region - one based on high quality, unique, single origin teas.  Our Kumaon Black and Kumaon Whiteare two of the first teas from this area to be available in the west.

Learn more about Kumaon's exciting future in an article we wrote for Fresh Cup Magazine: The Catalyst Behind Kumaon's Comeback.

March 2018 Newsletter - Green Glorious Green Tea

March 2018 Newsletter - Green Glorious Green Tea
Indi Khanna admires the fields from his new factory nestled in the Nilgiri mountains of southern India. His factory, Tea Studio, will serve as a teaching facility for crafting specialty loose leaf teas.

    Green Glorious Green...

This month we are featuring one of our favorite Nilgiri green teas:  Green Swords. We'll include a 1oz bag for just $1 with your online order.  Use the coupon code swords1 to receive the discount.

Nilgiri teas are bright and with a natural sweetness reminiscent of honey.  They are considered the best for making sun teas and iced teas because they are lower in tannins and difficult to over-steep.

Nilgiri teas grow year-round in India’s high-elevation tropical mountain range.  While the land under cultivation is only slightly larger than Darjeeling, production is four times as high.  Similar to Darjeeling, the area was first developed as a hill station for British soldiers to escape the hot Indian summers. Tea was first planted in 1835 and has flourished since then.

Unique to the Nilgiris, 70% of cultivation is done by independent small growers who typically own less than a hectare. They sell their harvested green leaf to factories for processing.

February 2018 Newsletter - The Secret Life of Kumaon Black

February 2018 Newsletter - The Secret Life of Kumaon Black
Views from a Hindu temple overlooking the vast Himalaya a short walk from Chiripani - a 180 year old tea garden where the Kumaon White and Kumaon Black teas are grown.

The Secret Life of Kumaon Black...

Kumaon, the region alongside Nepal's western border was first planted with tea in the 1850s.  The tea plants thrived, but were too far from the ports to make plantation development feasible. The experimental plots were abandoned, leaving the young cuttings to grow wild.  However, beginning in the 1990s, the government took up a program to revive tea growth as a way to create rural livelihood opportunities.

Desmond Birkbeck oversees the government’s efforts in his hometown of Champawat.  He also runs his family's own tea garden that contains some of the oldest tea trees in the region.  We've partnered with him to bring these unique Kumaon teas outside of India for the first time.

Kumaon Black is a fine and even sorted black tea with abundant golden tips woven throughout.  It brews a deep amber color with aromatic flavor notes of caramel and chocolate.  Treat yourself to this unique taste  - for the month of February, get 25% off any amount of Kumaon Black.

We hope to keep your winters warm.  Enjoy!

November 2017 Newsletter - Leaf Piles of Plenty

farmer picking tea up leaves and getting them ready for withering, india, young mountain tea

This farmer is sorting fresh picked tea leaves in Assam before arranging the leaves on screens where they are steamed over a wood fire, rolled, and finally dried.

        Leaf Piles of Plenty

As the rakes and leaf piles appear - it only fitting to pay tribute to our favorite leaf, one that produces the MOST consumed beverage in the world after water (any guess on #3? Answer at bottom).

Tea comes from a tree called Camellia sinensis. Once new growth appears in the spring, farmers pass through the rows every 7 days selecting certain parts of the plant for processing.  It takes about 5 lbs of green leaf to make 1 lb of finished tea. Those leaves are carefully transported from field to factory where they are withered (to reduce water content), rolled (to break the cell wall), oxidized, and then dried.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are including a free 1 oz bag of Kumaon Blackwhen you place an order of $15 or more in the month of November.  And if you would like to see for yourself where this tea comes from, join us on our Kumaon India Tea Trip (next trip is in May 2018).

India's most famous and lucrative tea industry is at a stand still.  The Gorkhas, Darjeeling's Nepali speaking minorities, are on strike demanding a separatist state from the Indian government.  Much of the unrest is due to the unequal distribution of wealth created by the plantation style agriculture imposed on the region since British rule.  Read more here...

Chill Out with a Cold Brew

The heat of the summer provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy the nuanced tastes of cold brews.  Sun teas extract delicate flavors from your favorite leaves that are often masked in hot water, and contain less caffeine than their piping hot sisters.  Some of our favorites include our Kumaon White, Kumaon Black and Darjeeling 1st Flush.  So harness some solar gain with our Sun Tea Special, and enjoy the subtle-teas in your summer cups.

We know it takes a little more tea to make a cold brew, so this month we'd like to include a few leaves on us.
